What is Point-to-Point
Point-to-Point racing is an amateur version of National Hunt racing or the Steeplechase. The name Point-to-Point refers to the points of the church steeples that the horses used to follow during a race. Nowadays, the difference between point-to-point races & steeplechases is that point-to-point races are run cross country, while steeplechases tend to be run on tracks.
What to Wear
There are no hard & fast rules about what to wear but common sense should prevail. A warm coat & wellies during cold &/or wet weather are a must while ‘killer heels’ are never recommended no matter what the weather! The course is quite open so it pays to wrap-up warm against the elements or pack the sun cream if it’s sunny. As such, there is no dress code, so come as you are.
Gate Opening & Start Times
The gate opens at 11:00 three-hours before the first race at 14:00, so you will have plenty of time to study the form & picnic before racing begins. There will be a Hound Parade at 12:45 – not to be missed!
Admission & Parking
Entrance fee is £15 per adult in advance / £20 on the day. Children are always welcome & those aged 16 years or under are admitted free. There is ample free parking so just turn up on the day.
Dogs
Responsible dog owners & their dogs are welcomed. The rural location provides an ideal opportunity to spend a day in the countryside with your dog. Please remember though to keep dogs on leads at all times, bring food & water for them, do not leave them in cars unattended in hot weather & please clean up after them.
Racecards
Racecards can be purchased on the day. Your racecard will contain the runners & riders for each race, along with the colours & the names of the owner & trainer for each horse. It will also provide information of the trade stands, sponsors & special attractions on offer.
Food & Drink
Bar & catering facilities are available on-site. For many people though, an enjoyable part of the day at a Point-to-Point is the picnic & drinks which you are welcome to bring along with you.
Trade Stands
There will be trade stands selling food, drink & country goods. There will also be fairground amusements which adds to the atmosphere of the day.
Photography
Whilst general photography for personal use is allowed at the Point-to-Point meeting, commercial photographers must seek permission from the Secretary of the meeting to attend. Please use the Enquiry Form to register your interest & obtain the details of the meeting Secretary.
